What is an ABPTS Board-Certified Pediatric Clinical Specialist (PCS), and why does it matter?
The American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) is the official governing body that certifies physical therapists who possess advanced clinical knowledge and skills in specialized areas. Board certification is a rigorous achievement. Nationwide, only about 6% to 10% of all physical therapists are board-certified. It is even rarer in our area: the most recent data (2024) reports only 13 pediatric specialists in the entire state of Nevada. To her knowledge, Anne is one of two pediatric specialists in Northern Nevada and the only one available for mobile/outpatient care. Choosing a PCS means your child is working with a therapist recognized at the highest national level for their expertise.
What are the requirements to achieve this certification?
It takes immense dedication to even qualify to sit for the 200-question board exam. A physical therapist must either complete an accredited pediatric residency or document at least 2,000 hours of direct pediatric clinical care (with 500 of those hours completed within the last three years). Anne qualified through the clinical pathway, having personally completed well over 2,000 hours of specialized hands-on care with pediatric patients before applying.
What did it take to pass the exam?
Passing requires a deep understanding of pediatric development, pathology, and evidence-based treatments. To pass, candidates must achieve a scaled score of 500 out of 800. Anne dedicated over 150 hours to studying across three months, deep-diving into nearly 900 pages of advanced clinical textbooks. Anne earned a scaled score of 712 which reflects comprehensive mastery of the material.
What did it take to pass the exam?
When Anne opened her own practice, she wanted to give families absolute certainty that their children are receiving the highest standard of evidence-based care. Pursuing this certification wasn't just about passing a test; it was a commitment to sharpening her clinical skills and staying at the absolute forefront of pediatric physical therapy. This milestone is a reflection of her dedication to helping your child thrive.
